Choosing between single and double mechanical seals is one of the most common decisions when specifying a pump or an agitator. Double mechanical seals are not always the right answer, and neither are single ones: each configuration suits a different fluid, a different level of risk and a different budget. This guide explains the practical differences so you can decide with confidence.
Single Seal: The Standard Option
A single mechanical seal uses one set of sealing faces and is suitable for most applications with non-hazardous fluids, such as clean water or low-toxicity fluids, where a minimal leak does not pose a significant risk.
Double Mechanical Seals: Greater Safety
A double seal uses two sets of sealing faces with a barrier fluid between them. It is recommended when the process fluid is toxic, flammable, corrosive, or when environmental regulations require zero fugitive emissions, as is often the case in petrochemical operations.
Cost and Maintenance Considerations
Double seals have a higher initial cost and require a support system for the barrier fluid (API plan), but they offer greater operational safety and lower environmental risk. Single seals are more economical and simpler to maintain.
Which One Do You Need?
The decision depends on the fluid, applicable regulations, and the level of risk acceptable for your operation. At Y&AR Asociados we help you evaluate your specific case within the SEALER INDUSTRIAL catalog.
Still Can’t Decide?

The choice between a single and double seal also depends on how the equipment is installed. If you want to reduce installation errors, check out our guide on how to choose the right mechanical seal for your equipment, and if your process already shows leaks or premature wear, learn about the most common causes of mechanical seal failure and how to prevent them.
Both configurations are available within the SEALER INDUSTRIAL cartridge seal line that we distribute in Venezuela.
